I ended up living in Portland for a while, but I'm at UAF again, yes. It's hard to resist an offer of a lab and an office of my own, and two electron microscopes, although it doesn't entirely make up for the miserable weather. In fact, last night I was out until late with my old topology professor, in -35C blowing icefog trying to catch crystals in little dewars of liquid nitrogen. The cops actually came by to make sure we were okay, and laughed at us for being insane scientists. I did get to spend the entire day playing, so despite the insanity I'll probably be out doing it again, soon.
Portland, eh? And now back in Fairbanks. Last time I heard from a friend up there, (while I was still in Anchorage), he was helping his daughter try to thaw out her well, which had frozen. Chaaaaaarming.
Though living in LA, (which may in fact be slowly poisoning the very fibers of my soul and body), I'm in New Mexico right now ('whoa, all those mountains are flat!' 'they're called 'mesas', Marie.' '...'), and have pretty much resolved to travel this year as much as I can (and start taking classes... I'll have residency in California in time for summer). To see people, or things, or... god only knows what's gathering velocity here. I hope to find out sooner than later... hate being the last one let in on a joke, you know?
I'm glad to hear you're doing well (to hear from you in general!). Despite the weather, I hope you have (and keep) all of your digits. It'll be summer soon and I've no doubt it'll be gorgeous (homesick? Yes, yes indeed). Another year flies by. Take care of yourself.
