Once:
(beyond the times we know)
I was a little altar,
Built on lines of sustenance, somehow
On pillars of old song and of Cyprus.
In this way I climbed over many years,
I cut a narrow path with wicked words
While you – with steel – went conquering.
I saw nations bend at your breath,
Saw you ride bareback the starless night.
And I, a wraith, went in mist: thin
Against the rain, laughing without a guess
Of what was coming for the darkness.
Into your sacred circle, I was dancing
– unaware -
A child lead by wisp and wind.
I buried myself in the deep wood,
‘Neath the great, black boughs; I
Happened, once, to see you hunting,
Like a derelict god, reflected
In the idols of antiquity
As in a trance: the great spell took me
The curve of your bow became
The arc of my body to your own
While I saw, for the first time, the temple
Around me – and within me -
Begin to burn with brilliant light.
